Manhunt Expands in Niceville Murder Case

_CrimLawyer

Authorities have arrested five of six suspects in the slaying of a 43-year-old man in June 2026. In hopes of apprehending the sixth suspect, they expanded the search to nearby states and increased the bounty.

The Florida Sheriffs’ Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program partnered with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers to offer an $11,000 reward for information that leads to the location and capture of a 38-year-old woman, who is wanted on an open count of murder in the death of a 43-year-old man.

According to authorities, Niceville Police Department detectives learned the body was buried in a property off Sunset Lane in Freeport. Niceville police notified the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. After officers obtained a search warrant, they discovered human remains buried in a shallow grave on the property.

“This is not the news we hoped to deliver to our Niceville community,” Niceville Police Chief Mark Hayse said after the identification was confirmed. “We will continue working closely with our partners to see this case through.”

Paid Informants and Search Warrants

During investigations, officers often rely on paid informants. These individuals usually receive money and/or leniency in another matter in exchange for information. This self-interest often affects reliability. Some people will say almost anything for love or money.

Generally, only reliable information constitutes probable cause, which is the standard of proof at this stage of a criminal prosecution. Evidence of reliability includes:

  • Informer’s prior track record,
  • AMount of tangible or intangible compensation,
  • The size of the carrot (i.e. how big was the reward),
  • Who approached who (did the witness approach investigators or vice-versa), and
  • The use of a stick (i.e. cooperate or else).

If the informant’s testimony isn’t reliable, a Tampa criminal defense lawyer can get the warrant and any subsequently discovered evidence, which in the above case was a body, thrown out of court.

Incidentally, a murder case can hold up in court without a body. However, prosecutors are often hard-pressed to prove both death and homicide in these situations.

If the warrant defect is incurable, prosecutors often try to use a search warrant exception, such as plain view, to introduce the evidence. A Tampa criminal defense lawyer must be prepared to counter such an argument.

Paid Informants and Evidence at Trial

Reliability is a pretrial matter for a judge to decide. The factfinder (judge or jury) must decide whether the informant’s testimony was accurate.

Accuracy usually isn’t an issue if the testimony concerned physical evidence. The body was in the field or it wasn’t. Accuracy is a major issue if the witness claims the defendant committed certain acts or said certain things. Accuracy is an even bigger issue if prosecutors have no corroborating evidence and it’s just he-said, she-said.

To undermine accuracy and create a reasonable doubt as to the informant’s testimony, defense lawyers often point out inconsistencies between trial testimony and earlier testimony, perhaps at a deposition. The size of the carrot or stick, as discussed above, could also cast doubt on the testimony’s accuracy.

"I was in the unfortunate situation of having to hire a lawyer for my grandson and since I did not know of anyone that could refer me, I had to rely on my judgement of character and when I sat down in front of Omar, I knew that I had made the right decision. He is a very professional, well versed in the law, knowledgeable young man that takes the time to explain every aspect of your case to you. He returns calls promptly, knows your case inside out and is very punctual in meetings and court hearings. I could not have chosen a better, more qualified lawyer to represent my grandson. He comes highly recommended by me and you will not go wrong in obtaining his services."

"It is with pleasure that we wish to recommend Mr. Omar Abdelghany in his practice as a Criminal Defense Attorney. He was hired in the defense of our son. The defense included more than one offense, which required legal maneuvering to address the issues. Omar's skills came into play in positioning the case, which resulted in a good outcome given the facts at hand."
